History Booklets
Following is a brief description of each of our three history booklets.
1. Our First 50 Years Serving Our Lord - 42 pages. In 2008 Ed Vavra researched and wrote this in-depth look at the earliest history of our church, (Bohemian and Moravian Brethren Church) from how conditions in Bohemia & Moravia were such that our early immigrants sought religious freedom in the United States, their journey, and how our church was established. Also included is a history of Rev. František Kun, how he came to our church and became a missionary to many immigrant groups in the Midwest, founding many churches in Iowa and in the surrounding states. The booklet helps us understand why our little church was so important in those early days and is a very good read.
2. Our First 100 Years Serving Our Lord - 21 pages. Published for the 1958 church centennial, this booklet contains a history of the first 100 years of the church, including information on the “mother church” and its branches: the “west church” (Evangelical Bohemian Moravian Reformed Brethren, aka Chadima Chapel) and the “east church” (Bohemian Reformed Evangelical Church, aka Rogers Grove Church), as well as biographies of the pastors. It also includes an account of how the congregation mourned the assassination of President Lincoln in 1965, a large crowd processing along country roads to the church at which they were then meeting some two or three miles away, singing hymns as they walked.
3. 150 Years Serving Our Lord – 36-pages. This 2008 update history focuses on how music has played an important role throughout our church history, as well as church organization history (such as the women's and youth groups), biographies of pastors that have served since the 1950s, and greetings from former pastors. In 1956 our church joined the Presbyterian Church USA and became known as First Presbyterian Church near Ely.
